Howdy [subscriber:firstname | default:yall],

This is the Wolfpaw Weekly. Don’t remember signing up or don’t want this anymore? It’s easy to unsubscribe.

I’m doing a 366 Day Challenge, and am 289 days in! You can follow along on my PixelFed account.

I’ve been spending the past week trying to come up with a name for my new Mastodon instance. This is a project that I’d love to take the advice that I’m always given and choose a placeholder then figure out a name later. Unfortunately this is not really possible with a project like this, since the domain is hardcoded so many places. Hopefully I’ll solve this today. Naming things is hard!

Outside of difficult naming tasks, I’ve been distracted by lots of life events, both positive and negative. This again has had an impact on my work, as well as getting these newsletters out. I’ve still made time to consume some things to share with yall below.

Facebook’s Expanded VR Policies Disallow “invading personal space” and “sexual gestures” – Ben Lang, Road to VR

It won’t be requiring a Facebook account that causes Oculus to die. It will be Facebook trying to stop adults from using VR for the most popular use case of VR: virtual boning.

Inside eBay’s Cockroach Cult: The Ghastly Story of a Stalking Scandal – david Streitfeld, NYT

It is kinda insane the level of retribution that some companies take as opposed to actually fixing a problem. Wait no, this was probably still cheaper to ebay, now it makes sense.

Computer Scientists Break Traveling Salesperson Record – Erica Klarreich, Quanta Magazine

Apparently subtracting “0.2 billionth of a trillionth of a trillionth of a percent” is a huge breakthrough when it comes to solving a long-standing comp-sci problem. Sure? Congrats.

Researchers gave thousands of dollars to homeless people. The results defied stereotypes. –

Maybe it is the stereotype that needs to change. Giving people housing stops them from being houseless. Giving people money can help too, shocker.

instead I get “The king is smoking pot while his villagers die”

Why are Smart People So Dumb?

I recognize far too many of the thought leaders described in this video. My main mode of video consumption is edutainment, so that’s not very surprising. What is surprising is how much I’ll still listen to people who otherwise look insane.

Library Takeout

I found this video via the latest Garbage Day newsletter, then Mastodon. I agree with the comment that Ryan Broderick highlighted: “This is a hundred times better than it has any business being.”

Wolfwalkers — Official Trailer

I adore ‘Song of the Sea’ and ‘The Secret of Kells’. And I love wolves. So yeah, glad that I have a free AppleTV account long enough to watch this when it arrives in December.
