I sometimes hesitate to talk about that stuff, since I realize that I still have things going generally well. But at the same time, I don’t want to compartmentalize so much that I’m presenting a phony, social-media ready version of myself.
I use some AI tools for coding. It has really upped my game on the work that I already do. It’s helped me troubleshoot some problems that I might have otherwise abandoned, if not spent hours on finding a little problem. I think that for some things, it’s useful and powerful and can lead toward some good things in the future.
I’m not an AI evangelist by any means, and I generally try to keep that stuff to myself because I know how insufferable some people are when they try to ignore all of the harms and claim how great it is for everything. There is a lot that needs to be worked out, and I’m not the one to solve those problems. But I do think that they are being worked on by people who can make positive change to current technological issues.
What I don’t see is a concerted effort to solve the social and human problems that are being raised by the proliferation of AI into every industry. I have been doing web development professionally for two decades, and have been self employed for much of that time. My current website support business, FixUpFox, is about eleven years old. The past year has been more challenging than ever in finding new clients, and churn has become untenable.
I have had a few clients tell me that their own businesses are suffering due to the rise of AI toolchains in their industries. I’ve seen folks shift businesses, leading to them lowering or canceling plans with me. I don’t blame them for that, and I hope that they find ways to succeed as well.
I don’t know what the future is. I always knew that I’d not do this as a living forever, but I don’t have a plan in place for what’s next. I’m going to keep trying things out, including making things to share with others who are likewise struggling with upheavals in the world.

it’s funny when sites run for decades and finally leave beta like, oh that actually means something at this point?
Not at all troubling for the governor to be able to declare groups that he doesn’t like as terrorists, nope.
This is one of the better arguments that I’ve read to not just completely disregard the reality that AI is here, whether major firms survive or not.
This plays well into the presentation that I’m giving tomorrow at Orlando Code Camp. The web is ours to shape as we see fit!
We already know this horror through living it. Now we have fictional examples to describe this fear.

I love the type of horror that comes from the environment just existing, on such a larger-than-human scale that it isn’t even fighting us, it’s just doing what it does without a concern for our existence within it.
Oh look, it’s Orlando. Not at all surprising that Florida is leading the way on finding new ways to enrich a few large corporations while harming the people who actually live here.
One of those big negatives that I was referring to above.

We’ve already found that most people won’t pirate if they have cheap, easy ways to access media legally. Now that companies have turned that spigot of content that people actually want way down in favor of slop, it’s not surprising that pirating is getting a renewal. Unfortunately including a different type of scamming altogether.
