david wolfpaw • 30 Jan 2026 • Reading time: 6 minsI’m self employed. Part of that means that I have to look out for myself a bit more than an employee of another business. Part of it means that I have to trade time away for money, which regrettably we use to stay alive.
But part of it also means that I question my ability to commit to and make change with something like the National Shutdown taking place today (this newsletter was written on Thursday the 29th of January).
Reading the Garbage Day newsletter, a journalistic source that I never once regret paying for, I saw this quote:
if need be, you go on strike. Which is why, tomorrow, instead of our usual Friday issue, Garbage Day is joining the general strike in solidarity with Minneapolis.
I recognize that this might make us seem like less “objective” journalists, but we have an audience of over 100,000 readers and a responsibility as Americans. I, also, don’t really give a shit anymore. And neither does my team.
I think that it’s more objective to show that you have conviction, and that you aren’t hiding behind platitudes. Why do we need to bother to pretend that life isn’t political, when there are powerful people making my life political. Or when the apparatus for the Republican party has been explicitly a Conservative project from the start, before they had the tagline “Fair and Balanced”, one of the biggest lies ever told ad nauseam. And I am very ad nauseated.
I don’t know what to do. I hate what is going on. I hate that things are getting worse in some ways and despite what appears to be bipartisan support, it keeps on going.

Definitely not an issue when an AI that you don’t control has access to all of your files and apps, nope.
