I keep finding excuses not to do more coding

It was my birthday this week! I had a chill one which consisted of a few small and adorable gifts, the movie ‘Free Guy’ (I liked it!), and far too much sushi and tempura (I also liked that!). I wrote my first blog post in close to two years, with stuff that yall in the newsletter have likely seen already.

In addition to celebrating and kicking a fair amount of the sickness that I’ve had going on for the past month or so, I have been testing out a new laptop while mine gets serviced. What used to be a 1-2 day repair is now quoted at two weeks. Thankfully I have a service contract still so it should be free to get my laptop in great condition to get back to work, but I did get a chance to try out the new M1 chip on a Macbook Air. It’s ok, and feels nice, but my worry that there wouldn’t be enough RAM to do something crazy like run both Firefox and Discord at the same time has turned out to be true.

Turns out that my dev environment doesn’t work on the new chips! I’ve been shopping around for a new local development setup, and have been getting lots of suggestions online, most of which involve Docker which I always assumed to be even more memory intensive than VirtualBox.

All of that is to say that I have made no progress this week on the new theme that I’m planning, and in the meantime, WordPress v5.9 was released on Tuesday and I’m feeling more and more behind despite the near total lack of interesting themes for it.

I realize this isn’t very interesting to those not into WordPress development, but the month is almost over and I’m going to try to commit myself to starting a new fun coding project for February while keeping up on this. I’ll share my next idea and any progress in next week’s newsletter!

tweet from @Giraffaloops that reads "wtf" with a woozy face emoji. There is a drawing of an anxious looking person on a couch with an arrow pointing at them that has text, "taking time off", and another arrow pointing at them that has text, "overwhelming guilt of not being productive during time off"

I think that it’s wroth not apologizing for the lateness of every reply. I feel guilty if an email looking for a reply goes a full day and that’s not healthy for any of us!

It’s cool to think that something that looks so complex can still be done by someone at home with tools that are semi-affordable.

A series of three messages on tumblr

Message one by garthedgirl: "get vaccinated so we never have to see CNN talk about an omega variant"

message two by kikokuso: "An omega variant would be one of the last covid variants and the trend is that covid is slowly becoming more infectious and less severe with each mutation. This would mean that the omega variant would spread and multiply extremely easily, but would also be weak and mild in symptoms.

Therefore we can consider the omega variant submissive and breedable."

Message three by garthedgirl: "op here. i want a lobotomy"

I didn’t expect to watch a 2+ hour video about NFTs, let alone be engrossed the entire time. But here we are, and I highly recommend this if you have questions about crypto or NFTs or want some good talking points on the issues with them.
