I want to talk briefly about tech.lgbt, and Mastodon as a whole. There have been quite a few kerfuffles in the space recently, which have made me rethink how I use it a lot. I’ve paused my Twitter usage basically, and made a bit of a proclamation there the other day for fun.
When I look at the signup requests that aren’t spam for my Mastodon instance, I remember why it is better overall: It is your shaped space. There are some things that Twitter does better, and the network is different. But Mastodon excels at empowering every individual member with tools to curate and manage their experience in ways that corporate social media could not support.

Starting with some random web dev related links, we’ve got the fourth chapter of Jay Hoffman’s history of the web on Search, a (maybe?) sneaky way to track visitors using CSS from Lars Wikman, A discussion on the bad software that undergirds the world by Paul Ford, and Dave Rupert asking “What is the Value of Browser Diversity?“
I wanted to write a whole long piece about how places like Disney are extremely extractive of their surrounding environment. I’m still considering something for future editions when I try out an essay format for newsletters.
Disney recognizes the value provided by off-property rentals, going as far as to give a nod to real-world motels surrounding the property in ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’. But as barely fictionalized accounts like ‘The Florida Project‘, and the much more real footage shot for the story above show, “The Most Magical Place on Earth” is built on the shattered dreams of the neighbors forced to subsidize one of the largest multinational corporations in existence. One that has bent so much of the world to its will already.

Who Owns Florida’s Beaches? – Isaac Eger, Sarasota Magazine
Speaking of our favorite state and overbearing rich people, how do you feel about people owning all of the beaches, out to the tide line? Probably more frustrated than I feel about our neighbors owning and fencing off all of the area around the beautiful lake near our house, leaving no space for anyone to enjoy it.
Should we be surprised? Not at all. The US and Western Europe may get all of the attention, but that leaves plenty of places for internet driven political abuse to thrive elsewhere.
When an organization that you call terrorists claps back at you with a “bro, don’t try to make us look bad”, maybe you should rethink your entrapment strategy 😂
At least John Boyne had a sense of humor about it and didn’t try to defend his gaffe.
