Nostalgia is in the air. In the water. Coursing through the fiber. I dunno, we’re stuck in nostalgia.

I was watching an old gabi belle video on nostalgia, and followed it up with this interview with Grafton Tanner about his book Foreverism. And then since I was all late getting this newsletter out, I saw another one served up by my feed, this time an Adrian Ghastly video titled Old Videos and the Toxicity of Nostalgia.

While gabi belle brings up various long-lived media properties, Tanner makes the point that nostalgia can’t exist in a world where intellectual property is always getting refreshed with new entries. More Marvel! More Star Wars! More DC (allegedly)! I can’t long for something far in the past when the next show or movie is on screens right now.

Meanwhile, Ghastly thinks that we’re reminiscing with videos of 90’s B-roll footage to put ourselves in an era where we remember things being much simpler, whether that’s true or not.

I dunno, I like older things, but I don’t wish that I lived in the past or could return to that time. At best I’d go back in time and talk to my past self, but that’s about it.
