The first full week of 2024 was comparably uneventful to the end of 2023. That’s not a bad thing! Having a bit of down time is very welcome.
One thing that I spent an unnecessary amount of time on last week was choosing a new notebook. I already have this blue one that I used as a laser engraving test last year, hence the various burn intensities on the side:

That notebook has served me for the past few months as my journal and note taking system. But part of the problem is that I can be much more verbose when writing my thoughts than making plans. The journal section of the notebook ended up filling a lot more quickly than the notes section. And I was already looking for an excuse for other notebooks.
This led me down a path that I wasn’t expecting: how to get what I want for a notebook without buying some overpriced, branded item online. It turns out that notebook and planner culture is a thing, and it’s not unusual to see a simple daily and weekly planner cost $35+

I’ve found that most notebooks have most of what I want, but are missing just one thing. This one is good but doesn’t have a note section. That one is good but the spiral gets in the way of my right-handed writing. The other one is fine, but it squishes weekends to a tiny box, prioritizing the workweek over my preferred use of a constrained daily journaling section.
I’m really feeling the urge to design my own notebook for the future. I’m treating the start of the year as the perfect start for a new journal and notebook, whether one or two separate items. Hopefully by next year I’ll have something that makes me happy and that I can share with everyone else.
Do you have any favorite writing implements? Notebooks? Methods of note taking? Apps that help you journal? Please respond and share! Maybe next week I’ll make the newsletter about the feedback that I get.
Until then, write on.
