david wolfpaw • 20 Sep 2025 • Reading time: 6 minsThis week has been a drudge. In my personal life, mainly just work things. Which shouldn’t be much of a complaint! I acknowledge that there are way worse things going on, and my problems are not as big or as dire as a lot of folks.
But still, I don’t begrudge others venting about their own problems, however they compare to mine, and I will be ok with my complaining.
I have a client who is rightly frustrated at how long it has taken to get their site fixed. I worry about my future with that client, since I’m always worried at how first impressions come across.
In my defense, this is one of the oddest bugs that I’ve come across in a WordPress install that myself and several other techs worked on and couldn’t find the solution for. This was on the live site, a staging copy of the site, and even a dev copy of the site hosted on my own computer.
I stripped out all plugins, mu plugins, and drop-ins of course, as well as using a default theme. All of the normal testing things! I ensured that WordPress core was a fresh copy, with no other files. I started pulling the database apart, piece by piece, tearing this down to a basically brand new site, and still the bug persisted.
Could we solve it over time? Probably, and I’m sure that in some way the environment played a factor. But sometimes you just have to call it quits and that’s what I did here. I’ve spent two days painstakingly reconstructing the site from scratch on a new environment. Even with some automation tools to help, it’s a large site and took a lot to get all of that data. But I’m done! Now to make it live.
So that’s been my week. I came up with some creative ideas, but didn’t devote myself to any of them in my downtime. My brain has been too unfocused to do much more.

It appears that something happened to this article, but in case it comes back, there’s an excellent defense of art that doesn’t fit the art-critic mold, without having to resort to a nonsensical label like “outsider art”.
Also whoever planned this did a great job of scheduling it during Anthrocon this year.
Some folks might be “stuck”, and some might go with something that isn’t broken (any more than upgrading would be) and therefore doesn’t need fixing.
Such an insidious and ingenious idea: you can demonize parents now “for ruining children”, then you can demonize those children for being ruined when they are grown up.
