The stress of a lost dog

There’s always something, isn’t there? A few weeks ago I had to make the stressful decision to euthanize my eldest dog, who I’ve had for thirteen years. It’s not a decision that I wanted to have to make, but I know that her quality of life had been steadily declining, followed by a nosedive basically that made the decision a bit easier to swallow.

Earlier this week, our other two dogs got out of the yard again. Because we still haven’t taken the measure to fortify the bottoms of our fences even more than we have, and they love to dig. tbh I still don’t know which hole they got out of, since I found two new ones that morning that they could have squeezed out with.

What I do know is that I heard one of them barking, realized that she was in the front yard, and got her inside. I went looking for the other one who I had already chased for hours during a hurricane, because she took advantage of a fence panel that came down to leave. To be clear, we’d just let her out to use the restroom when the storm was subsiding, not like at the height of it πŸ˜…

From what we’ve put together, they both ran to the main street at the end of the block, our husky got struck by a car, and the person got out and tried to get her in the car but she ran off and hid. The other one then immediately ran home and started the barking that I heard.

We spent two days looking for her. I crawled into ditches, looked into drainage pipes, walked behind most of the houses and businesses in the neighborhood to check corners and behind bushes and stuff. I still have no idea where she was hiding. Honestly we assume that she had been immediately picked up and called every vet in the area and searched Animal Services, which was as sad and frustrating as it always is to me to go to.

Anyway, about 48 hours after she went missing, she finally came back to the house on her own, which we found out when the other dog started barking like crazy again. Sadly that means that while injured she had to squeeze under the fence. Her leg looked pretty gnarly, but after getting it cleaned up at the emergency vet, it was looking a lot better.

They did a lot of stuff to check on her, and while she did have a bit of leg damage, she looks like she’s gonna make a pretty good recovery. Honestly she’s basically back to wanting to be a pest again πŸ˜…

So far it’s cost about $3,000 to get her taken care of. It’s very worth it to me, but at the same time a big hit for this time of year, and while I’m still planning my trip to Sweden in February. At the moment I still think that I’m going, but while at the vet I was definitely thinking of canceling.

That’s it. Wanted to share what’s been going on, dog-wise. They all have air-tags on their collars now, something that I should have done months ago. She will be ok, she’s on meds and she has festive bandages on. I’m attaching a pic below, and prefacing it with the fact that she basically has this face half the time anyway, plus she’s just waking up from anesthesia which helped her relax while they took care of her.

But in the meantime we can appreciate some of the still popular things, as well as hidden gems yet to be uncovered, that we can now use freely.

Here’s another sucky thing about copyright: companies like United Healthcare abusing it to remove things that they don’t like from the internet, even when they clearly do not even own those copyrights.
