Opening this week’s newsletter with a content ask: I’ve been thinking about writing a blog post, mainly about the challenges of content moderation, specifically around communicating them to the public. I can’t claim to be the most knowledgeable here, but I do think that I have some insights, and certainly a bit more experience than many commentators around the current Tumblr kerfuffle.

The tentative title is, “A Lukewarm Defense of Matt Mullenweg, Tumblr, and Moderation Policies”. My concern is that even going that far will lead me to miss narratives, as well as inadvertently pushing a more harmful narrative. My reasoning for doing so is that so many comments that I’ve heard already are so knee-jerk that they are freely spreading misinformation and disinformation, and I want to have my thoughts down and organized somewhere that represents me and not the entire mod team of tech.lgbt

So my ask of you is, if you think it would be wrong of me to write something that isn’t fully critical of Tumblr and their CEO? I feel like nuance can be helpful, but I want the rest of my trans and queer audience to weigh in if you think that it’s a bad idea.

On to the rest of the newsletter!

Oops, missed a week there. I’ve been busy catching up on things post-con, got two tooth surgeries done, been managing health issues with partners and my oldest dog, and just trying to get back in the flow of things. So I’m ok having missed, but still wanna explain why.

Speaking of post-con, I’ve made a blog post that is mainly a photo dump of my time at FurSquared 2024. Overall it was a good time! I’m thankful for the friends that I got to spend the weekend with. It really was a nice break from some stressors that I’ve been managing lately.

With all of the things going on, I didn’t make much progress on personal projects last week. I still found ways to make improvements, such as cleaning and organizing the office and craft room, making it easier to find and use things, and just feeling more open.

Alright, that’s enough for now. See yall next week 💝

With the rise of AI, web crawlers are suddenly controversial – David Pierce, The Verge

A nice little history of robots.txt. The file is a simple tool that websites can use, and is generally mutually agreed upon, even if not enforced in any way. Running a federated social network, I wonder how well a file like this for opt-in on various data crawlers/scrapers would be received.

Air Canada must honor refund policy invented by airline’s chatbot – Ashley Belanger, ArsTechnica

What a shock. Not that the chatbot did this, not that the company tried to argue that they weren’t responsible for their chatbot, but that it even made it as far as needing to have a case against it.

‘Gender hegemony’: How colonialism distorted African perspectives of trans identity – Cassandra Roxburgh, Minority Africa

Shared with me via a post concerning trans identity among BIPOC, this is one of several articles about how a lot of transphobic beliefs are firmly cemented as part of a colonial mindset.

No One’s Going To Do It For You – Artemis Wishfoot

Good advice: For better or worse, change has to start with you.

the ethics of CONTENT – mia cole

I have a content consumption addiction. And I am a content creator (kinda). I’m sorry?

The Creepiest Town In America – Papa Meat

Scientology. Already creepy.

Sympathy for the Machine – Curious Archive

It’s often a lot easier for me to feel sympathy for machines than the hands that built them.

The Rise & Fall & Rise of Choose Your Own Adventure Books – Secret Galaxy

These books are still great. Interactive Fiction is so enriching

I FORGIVE U | GOJIIMUSIC

I really love relaxing GOJII music 🥰

What do Final Girls tell us about women in horror? – Hysteria

Another great episode of Hysteria. Check out the whole show backlog!

The Shark Tank Charlatan – Scamfluencers

I feel like this story shouldn’t have been able to go farther than, “you literally stole your whole idea that you got onto Shark Tank with from your cousin who was already selling it.”

Are Creators and Platforms Ready for the Decline of Journalism Jobs? – The Digital Void Podcast

No, no I don’t think that they are.

Part One: Robert E. Lee: A Lifetime of Failure – Behind the Bastards

Another four part series, this time pushing back on narratives about the “Lost Cause” bs, Robert E. Lee’s “reluctance” to fight for the confederacy, and how even though he lost, he could be considered a “great” military leader. It’s all bullshit 🤣
