  • 2012 Into 2013 – Successes and Failures

    Batman is always prepared for the new year. And everything else.

    The end of the year is here! Rather, by the time this is posted, the beginning of 2013 will be upon us. For the standard re-examination that comes with the conclusion of a calendar cycle, keep reading.

    2012 was a time of many changes for me, both personal and professional. I’ve come to realize that I spend far too much of my time dreaming without doing, and an equally disproportionate amount of time being concerned with how others perceive me as opposed to how I perceive and treat myself. I think I’ve made some positive steps into making a happier year for myself and those around me. As always, it is those around me who have made me recognize that it is more about being a “Go-Giver” than a “Go-Getter”, since it returns in spades. A few thank you’s:

    WordCamp Orlando 2012 Writeup

    david Wolfpaw at the opening of WordCamp Orlando 2012I was one of the lead organizers of WordCamp Orlando, which was held on 1 December 2012. We ran a full day of WordPress developer and user networking, a full roster of distinguished speakers from the community who served both the novice and advanced users in their talks, and an overview of the platform and the forthcoming v3.5 release by one of the lead developers, Mark Jaquith.

    My day began several hours before the actual event, full of restless sleep while I concerned myself over whether anything had been forgotten. This ended up being a waste, as the event went off nearly flawlessly. The other organizer, Gary, had double checked all of the specifics of the event, our two A/V techs, Jean and Billy, both had their things together and did a great job all day, and Carol, our volunteer coordinator arrived at the venue even earlier than I did with plenty of people to help us set up.     There are plenty of reasons that you would want to use excerpts of posts. If you run a site that has a lot of lengthy posts, and want each to be showcased individually, then your posts page may benefit from the use of excerpts for display. An excerpt is a short intro to the post, usually ending with a “read more” link to the full text.

  • How to Make a Custom Post Type in WordPress

    Today we’re going to talk a bit about custom post types in WordPress, and how they can further help to develop a unique layout for your website. There are plenty of reasons that a blog owner would have to make use of custom post types.

    For instance, a photographer can use the build in gallery shortcode to easily create collections of images from a particular set. This can allow easy updating of a portfolio in a news style format, with newer work remaining at the top of the page of posts. For full page viewing of photos, or to avoid overflow, they may want to remove sidebars or asides from the main content of the site. This can be seen on the photography theme, where we’ve made a custom type of gallery to display your pictures.
