I don’t often do the type of introspection that allows me to look back and see what has happened, but instead look forward to see what might happen. Doing so would probably make me realize that most of my resolutions, as is the norm, are more hopes and dreams than promises to action. About half of my 2013 goals I achieved that year, and while I didn’t specifically state goals for 2014 (protip: this helps you avoid getting called out), I feel that the spirit of that post was in line with how the year actually went.
I’ve recently completed my second year of full-time self employment, and while there have been ups and downs, I think that I’m closer to getting the hang of it. I’m learning to delegate a bit more, though for personal and practical purposes, I still keep too much work on my own plate. Learning to manage myself and others is going to be a make or break action for me in 2015. With so many projects that I want to get off the ground, I either have to trim and become super-focused, or delegate tasks to others and oversee them. Since I’m one for frivolity and extravagance (when it comes to where I focus resources, at least), the latter is probably more likely. How can I decide which business ideas are more useful without trying them all out and seeing which ones flounder?
I’m not sure if that’s a rhetorical question, since I am quite aware that lack of focus is the most likely cause of any fizzling out that I may have. Countless projects have been started and dropped, many thankfully at the idea stage, but some progressed well beyond that. Still, I think that I can adequately give up some of my time to a variety of projects right now to see what sticks. After all, my livelihood is what is at stake, and there’s only so much that I can do alone in terms of finding and servicing clients.
Thus, 2015 is the year of experimentation. Expect to see a few new projects from me, starting with a new service later this month. Will everything that I try this year work out? Probably not. Will I learn a few lessons and have fun trying new things? I can only hope 🙂
